The Swedish flautist Magnus Irving makes his CD debut with music from
Russia, Sweden and France. On his FLUTE MUSIC you will find two short
pieces by the Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina, world première
recordings of two Swedish Flute Sonatas by Eduard Tubin and Lars Edlund
and finally some of the most charming French works for flute from the
20th century. The music is written for flute and piano, and also for flute
and soprano.
Magnus Irving Båge performs together with two of Sweden’s most
well-known pianists: Bengt-Åke Lundin and Carl-Axel Dominique, and
with the soprano Madeleine Barringer. They perform music by Sofia Gubaidulina,
Eduard Tubin, Lars Edlund, André Jolivet, Albert Roussel, Olivier
Messiaen and Henri Dutilleux.
The CD begins with the striking piece Sounds of the Forest by Sofia Gubaidulina,
a kind of pastoral feast, with links to the flute concertos of Vivaldi
as well as to the flute solo in Beethoven’s 6th Symphony. Then another
piece by Gubaidulina: Allegro Rustico.
One of the last works written by the Swedish composer Eduard Tubin was
Sonata for flute and piano (1979), which now for the first time is presented
on CD, together with Sonata for flute and piano by Lars Edlund, composed
in 1984.
When the French composer André Jolivet wrote his Chant de Linos
(Song of Linos) in 1944, he was inspired by the Greek mythology, and this
work became one of the most virtuos and challenging works in the flute
repertoire – even for the pianist.
Magnus Irving Båge performs the works by Gubaidulina, Tubin, Edlund
and Jolivet together with the pianist Bengt-Åke Lundin. Before the
second part with flute and piano, where Carl-Axel Dominique plays the
piano, Magnus Irving Båge and the soprano Madeleine Barringer present
Deux poèmes de Ronsard (Two poems by Ronsard) written in 1924 by
Albert Roussel to poems by the 16th century poet Pierre de Ronsard.
Carl-Axel Dominique is known as a specialist of French piano music, and
he also knew Olivier Messiaen personally. On this CD he and Magnus Irving
Båge perform three of the most famous works of the French flute
repertoire: Albert Roussel’s Joeurs de flûte (Flute players),
Olivier Messiaen’s Le Merle Noir (The blackbird) and finally the
flashing and virtuos Sonatine by Henri Dutilleux.
FLUTE MUSIC was recorded in the Concert Hall of the Royal Swedish Academy
of Music (“Nybrokajen 11”) in Stockholm and was produced with
financial support from the Swedish National Council for Cultural Affairs.

Flöjtisten Magnus Irving Båge cd-debuterar med rysk, svensk
och fransk musik. Hans FLUTE MUSIC innehåller två korta stycken
av ryska Sofia Gubajdulina, förstagångsinspelningar av två
svenska flöjtsonater av Eduard Tubin och Lars Edlund och ett delikat
urval av fransk 1900-talsmusik. Det är musik för flöjt
och piano, och något så ovanligt som ett verk för flöjt
och sopran.
Magnus Irving Båge framträder här med två av våra
mest namnkunniga pianister, Bengt-Åke Lundin och Carl-Axel Dominique,
och med sopranen Madeleine Barringer. De framför musik av Sofia Gubajdulina,
Eduard Tubin, Lars Edlund, André Jolivet, Albert Roussel, Olivier
Messiaen och Henri Dutilleux. Gubajdulina var förra årets mottagare
av det svenska Polar Music Prize och Dutilleux är höstens tonsättarprofil
i Stockholms Konserthus.
Cdn inleds med det märkliga stycket Sounds of the Forest (Skogens
klanger) av Sofia Gubajdulina, en slags pastisch på all pastoral
musik som skrivits för flöjt från barocken och in i vår
egen tid. Därefter ytterligare ett stycke av Gubajdulina, Allegro
Rustico.
Ett av den svenske tonsättaren Eduard Tubins sista verk var Sonat
för flöjt och piano (1979), vilken här får sin första
presentation på cd, liksom Lars Edlunds Sonat för flöjt
och piano från 1984.
Inspirerad av antikens myter och riter skrev fransmannen André
Jolivet 1944 Chant de Linos (Linos sång), ett av flöjtlitteraturens
mest virtuosa och krävande stycken, inte bara för flöjtsolisten.
Verken av Gubajdulina, Tubin, Edlund och Jolivet framför Magnus Irving
Båge tillsammans med pianisten Bengt-Åke Lundin. Före
den andra avdelningen med flöjt och piano, där Carl-Axel Dominique
tagit plats vid flygeln, presenteras Albert Roussels Deux poèmes
de Ronsard (Två dikter av Ronsard) från 1924 till texter av
1500-talspoeten Pierre de Ronsard, för flöjt och sopran (Madeleine
Barringer).
Carl-Axel Dominique har profilerat sig som en av våra finaste interpreter
av fransk musik, och han kände också Olivier Messiaen personligen.
På cdn hör vi Dominique och Magnus Irving Båge i tre
av den franska flöjtlitteraturens mest kända verk: Albert Roussels
Joeurs de flûte (Flöjtspelare), Olivier Messiaens Le Merle
Noir (Koltrasten) och Henri Dutilleuxs virtuosa och blixtrande Sonatine.
FLUTE MUSIC är inspelad i Kungliga Musikaliska Akademiens stora sal
i Stockholm (Nybrokajen 11) och är producerad med stöd av Statens
